We tint the Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X at both of our Calgary shops. Teslas have more glass than most vehicles, so the film you choose makes a big difference to how hot the cabin gets. This page covers which film to pick, the glass roof, the cameras and sensors, and what Alberta law allows.
Why the film choice matters on a Tesla
The Model 3 and Model Y have a large glass roof that runs from the top of the windshield to behind the rear seats. The Model S and Model X also have big glass areas. Tesla’s factory glass has a UV coating, but it doesn’t keep out much infrared heat. A ceramic or multilayer film adds the heat rejection the factory glass lacks.
A cooler cabin also means the air conditioning doesn’t have to run as hard. In an electric vehicle, that energy comes from the battery.
Which 3M film to choose
We recommend 3M Ceramic IR or 3M Crystalline for Teslas.
- Ceramic IR keeps out a lot of heat and comes in dark shades. It’s a good fit for the Model 3 and Model Y when you want privacy in the back and a cooler cabin.
- Crystalline keeps out the most heat while staying light. It suits owners who don’t want dark windows, and it’s a good match for the large glass on the Model S and Model X.
We also carry 3M Colour Stable, a carbon film. It gives privacy for less money, but it keeps out much less heat than the ceramic films, which matters on a car with this much glass.
The glass roof
We tint Tesla glass roofs. The roof lets in a lot of sun, so film there makes a noticeable difference on hot days. We usually suggest a lighter ceramic shade on the roof, because it cuts the heat while keeping the open, bright feel the roof is designed for. Depending on the model, we install the roof film in one piece or in sections.
Roof tinting isn’t on our standard price list because it depends on the model. Send us your model and year and we’ll quote it.
Cameras, sensors and phone key
Teslas use cameras behind the windshield and in the side pillars. Metallized window film can interfere with electronics, which is why we don’t use it. The 3M films we install are non-metallic. They don’t block GPS, Bluetooth, LTE, the phone key or the key card.
Alberta law and your Tesla
Alberta’s tint rules apply to a Tesla the same as any other vehicle. On an Alberta-registered vehicle driven on public roads, you can tint the rear side windows and the back glass any darkness, as long as the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides. The windshield and the front side windows can’t have any film, including clear film.
We install front-window and windshield film for vehicles registered outside Alberta, show and off-road vehicles, and medical exemption permit holders. The full rules are in our Alberta tint law guide.
Tesla tint prices
These are our standard prices for the two films we recommend for Teslas. They’re the same at both shops. Glass roof tinting is quoted separately.
| Package | 3M Ceramic IR | 3M Crystalline |
|---|---|---|
| Two front windows | $349 | $449 |
| Back windows | $649 | $819 |
| Windshield | $599 | $749 |

“Back windows” means the rear side windows and the back glass.

Both shops also install paint protection film, which guards the front end against rock chips. Packages start at $499. See our paint protection film page for the options.
